About form•Z

form•Z is a potent 3D modeling and design application featuring a variety of modeling personalities and tools with a distinctively easy to use interface. It is a most intuitive and versatile professional-grade 3D modeler that is based on advanced 3D solid and surface modeling methods. They maintain accurate representations that allow you to progress from conceptual sketching to detailed design, photorealistic visualization, construction drawings, animation, and fabrication. The current version of form•Z is available in three varieties: form•Z freeform•Z jr, and form•Z pro.

formZ PRO has in the past used a third party renderer called RenderZone that has had development cease due to limitations in support of new technology. It is now being replaced by V-Ray internally that offers more capabilities, much higher speed rendering straight out of the box and the ability for significant improved results with subtle ‘tweaking’ for amazing results that can be further accelerated with support new nVidia based GPU cards.

Sketchfab for formZ

Sketchfab for formz

Sketchfab for formZ

Sketchfab for is a website that allows you to share your 3D models so others can view and navigate around the model in real time. You can publish your models through, or you can embed them into your own web pages.

We have found clients now using this feature to collaborate and share ideas and designs that need input from stake holders in the design. In one case we have a major design firm that with their architectural design models uploaded their models can be navigated and annotated for answer on specific design questions. eg… do placement of the beams in this model conflict with ‘air con’ and ‘electrical ducting’?

Models do not need to be shared but can be easily navigated on line form any browser based device.

Introducing form•Z Free!

form•Z Free is a great way to start exploring the power of design with 3D solid modeling. With form•Z Free you can quickly create 3D solid models that can be presented using sun studies, real time rendering effects, sectioning and dimensions. form•Z Free features a subset of the tools found in form•Z Proand form•Z Jr with the same easy to use dynamic interface. The internal solid modeling reperesentaion maintains an accurate representation of 3D models which is ideal for 3D printing. This version has no restrictions for professional, academic, or home use.

Join us for a webinar introducing form•Z Free Wednesday November 19 1:00pm-2:00pm (18:00-19:00 GMT). In this webinar we will demonstrate the form•Z Free interface and powerful interactive modeling features. We will also show how form•Z Free can be used for 3D printing.

Download your free copy of formZ free today.

Screenshot 2014-05-10 09.40.13RenderZone allows you to create photorealistic renderings based on the LightWorks® rendering engine. It offers three levels of rendering: simple, z-buffer, and raytrace. A user can start developing the image of a 3D model at the simple level and gradually turn on features and render it at the most photorealistic level.

RenderZone also includes the ability to produce images based on global illumination techniques, which create renderings with the most realism, as the illumination of a scene takes into account the accurate distribution of light in the environment. In RenderZone, global illumination includes final gather, ambient occlusion, and radiosity techniques, which can be applied separately or can be combined.

One or more lights can be used, which can be ambient, distant (sun), cone, point, projector, area, custom, line, environment, and atmospheric lights. Lights may appear to glow in images, simulating the reflection of lights off dust particles in the air. Environment and atmospheric lights are advanced lights, which are especially optimized for global illumination. Other light types produce soft (mapped) or hard (raytraced) shadows.

Cubic and spherical environment mapping, bumps, backgrounds that include alpha channel support, depth effects, and post processing effects can be applied. Blur is an example of a post processing effect that simulates focusing your camera to a particular area of your modeling scene. Sky backgrounds that are procedurally generated come close to real skies that you may have captured with your camera.

State of the art shaders are used to render surfaces and other effects. A Material is defined by up to four layers of shaders, which produce color, reflections, transparency, and bump effects. Patterns in shaders can be pre-captured images or can be produced by a procedure.

Transparencies, reflections, and refractions can be applied at the z-buffer and raytrace levels. The reflections and refractions are always correctly raytraced, even when they are produced by the z-buffer rendering. This is achieved by applying a mixed rendering method, where surfaces with no reflections are rendered using z-buffer and the rendering effects of reflective surfaces are produced using raytracing.

Daniel Lloyd 3D modeller

Daniel Lloyd 3D modeller is an up and coming 3D modeller, one of our happy clients and a resident in Auckland New Zealand.

Daniel uses our 3D tools;  bonzai3D and Cinema4D Studio R15 and he is glad he went down the Cinema4d path, it was a real life saver on the ‘Spartacus Production’  for VFX and the requests from the DOP in being able to take sketchup models via bonzai3D from the set designers and extend the environment virtually, slap in some quick textures, light the scene and hit render.

“Never thought I’d use the mograph module but now the cloner’s become my best friend.”

Methodcast and formZ training

Methodcast and formZ Setup

This video tutorial takes you through how I set up some helpful defaults before working in the formZ and bonzai3d modeling environment. These are things I like to do when starting fresh to make my modeling workflow more productive. Are these all of the settings I use? No, but they are a nice start. I also show why I use these settings with a few examples. I hope you find them useful too.

Methodcast and formZ – using material ID’s in formZ or bonzai3D with Maxwell Render

This technique by Evan Troxell who runs and creates the incredibly useful site for training and using Methodcast and formZ training- it will save you huge amounts of time when you need to tweak your rendering’s colours and save you from the endless cycle of tweaking and re-rendering. You can go directly to his site here and see this 10 min. video. There are many powerful techniques shown here that will make your process of getting the right results incredibly quickly.

Have you been assigning materials to your scenes, rendering, tweaking color, re-rendering, tweaking, rendering ad nauseam? I used to do this too. Well with this tutorial, it’s time to stop! Learn the trick the pros use to tweak color after the rendering is already done in an image editor using a Material ID layer. I’ll show you exactly how to do it in my favorite 3d tools – formZ and Maxwell Render. It works in other programs as well.
